ON-SITE COUNTER BORE MACHINING

Precision Diesel Machining

RESTORE THE FOUNDATION OF YOUR DIESEL ENGINE

PRECISION COUNTER BORE MACHINING AT YOUR LOCATION

Counter bore machining is a precision process used during certain heavy-duty diesel engine rebuilds to restore worn or damaged cylinder-liner counterbores in the engine block.

Bo’s Garage performs on-site counter bore machining at your facility or job site. This is an important and critical step within the engine rebuilding process. Each block is inspected and measured to determine the machining and shim requirements for the application.

What Is Counter Bore Machining?

WHY PROPER LINER HEIGHT MATTERS

PRECISION AT THE LINER SEAT HELPS PROTECT THE ENTIRE ENGINE

A heavy-duty diesel engine’s cylinder liners rest on precisely machined surfaces in the engine block. Wear, fretting or erosion around these surfaces can prevent a liner from seating correctly.

Counter bore machining removes a controlled amount of material to create a clean, level liner seating surface. The appropriate counterbore shims can then be selected to help restore the required liner height for the engine application.

Correct measurement and liner positioning are important to cylinder-head sealing, load distribution and the long-term reliability of a rebuilt engine.

WHEN COUNTER BORE MACHINING MAY BE NEEDED

Visible wear, fretting or erosion around a liner seat
Counterbore depth or flatness outside specifications
Incorrect or uneven cylinder-liner protrusion
Sealing concerns related to liner positioning
Block measurements that identify damage during an engine rebuild

Final recommendations depend on the engine application and the measured condition of the block.

Our Process

FROM INSPECTION TO FINAL VERIFICATION

PRECISION AT EVERY STEP. VERIFIED BEFORE THE REBUILD CONTINUES.
1

INSPECT & MEASURE

The block and individual counterbores are inspected and measured to determine their condition.

2

MACHINE THE LINER SEAT

Worn or damaged material is carefully removed to create a clean, level seating surface.

3

DETERMINE SHIM REQUIREMENTS

The appropriate counterbore shims are selected for the engine and machining performed.

4

VERIFY FINAL DIMENSIONS

Counterbore depth and liner-positioning measurements are checked before engine assembly continues.

Every counterbore is carefully evaluated, machined and measured to help restore proper liner fit and support a dependable engine rebuild.
