HEAVY-DUTY DIESEL DIAGNOSTICS

Find the Cause

DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM BEFORE REPLACING PARTS

SYSTEMATIC TROUBLESHOOTING FOR COMMERCIAL TRUCKS, SEMIS AND CHARTER BUSES

Warning lights, power loss, starting trouble, abnormal smoke and other performance concerns can have several possible causes. Bo’s Garage evaluates the symptoms and checks the related systems to help identify where the problem begins.

Our diagnostic approach combines the available electronic information with visual inspection, measurements and system testing appropriate to the concern. The findings are then used to recommend the next repair step.

We diagnose CAT, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Mack, International, Volvo and Paccar diesel engines. Call with your vehicle information, warning lights and symptoms so we can discuss the problem.

Why Diagnostics Matter

THE SAME SYMPTOM CAN HAVE MORE THAN ONE CAUSE

GOOD REPAIR DECISIONS BEGIN WITH ACCURATE INFORMATION

Modern heavy-duty diesel engines rely on mechanical, electrical, fuel, air and cooling systems working together. A problem in one system can create symptoms that appear to come from somewhere else.

Fault codes can provide useful direction, but they do not always identify the failed component by themselves. Proper diagnosis may also require visual inspection, measurements and testing of the systems related to the complaint.

Identifying the source of the problem helps define the appropriate repair and reduces unnecessary parts replacement.

WHEN DIAGNOSTIC SERVICE MAY BE NEEDED

Check-engine or stop-engine warning lights
Engine derate or noticeable loss of power
Hard starting or a no-start condition
Rough idle, misfiring or inconsistent operation
Abnormal exhaust smoke
Overheating or recurring temperature concerns
Increased fuel or oil consumption
A problem that continues after a previous repair

The symptoms and operating conditions help determine which systems should be inspected and tested.

Our Process

FROM SYMPTOMS TO A REPAIR PLAN

A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO FINDING THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM
1

GATHER INFORMATION

We review the truck, bus or engine information, warning lights, symptoms and the conditions under which the problem occurs.

2

INSPECT & REVIEW DATA

The vehicle receives an initial inspection, and available electronic fault information is reviewed when applicable.

3

TEST RELATED SYSTEMS

The mechanical, electrical, fuel, air or cooling systems connected to the concern are checked as needed.

4

EXPLAIN THE FINDINGS

We review what was identified and discuss the recommended repair or next diagnostic step.

DIAGNOSTICS HELP DEFINE THE RIGHT SCOPE OF WORK

Diagnostic findings may point to a sensor or wiring concern, fuel or air-delivery problem, cooling-system issue, worn component or internal engine damage.

Because Bo’s Garage also provides full-service heavy-duty repair and diesel engine rebuilding, the next stage of work can be handled by the same shop when the required service is available.

Call with the year, make and model, engine manufacturer, warning lights and symptoms you are experiencing.
